PERU,
John 8:12 - Jesus said "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Located at over 11,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, ‘La Fuente’ clinic has ministered to the Quechua people of Cusco for over 12 years. Its focus is primarily on ophthalmological care, but it also has dental and physical therapy services. The clinic employs 60 Peruvian healthcare workers, and last year took care of about 38,000 patients.
Cusco is a city of 500,000 people in a mountainous region with almost 1.5 million inhabitants. The majority of these people live in great poverty without adequate access to specialty medical care. Cusco has one of the highest levels of ultraviolet radiation exposure in the world owing to its high altitude and proximity to the equator. A variety of blinding conditions including cataracts and pterygia are prevalent in this region and contribute to the suffering of many of the poor and elderly.
Dr. Nathan Henson and his wife Kristen moved to Cusco 11 years ago to serve the most needy and vulnerable populations in the Cusco region. Nathan works as an ophthalmologist and is the director of the La Fuente clinic.
Kristen works as the director of an orphanage called Casa Josefina. Their goal, by God’s grace, is to show the love of Christ in bringing sight to the blind, relieving suffering, caring for orphans, and sharing the good news of the gospel with those that God places in their path. The clinic is also involved in training and discipling Peruvian medical professionals to provide quality, Christ-centered care to their own people.
We are still needing funding to equip this program so that it can reach its fullest potential. Our hope is that this program will display the excellence of Christ in its quality, that it will change people’s lives by giving them amazing new sight, and that it will function as a long term tool for self sustainability. The program also aims to subsidize care for more orphans in the Casa Josefina orphanage.
We are also beginning a new annual training program for recently graduated ophthalmologists and optometrists in Peru. Our prayer is that this program will attract more quality medical providers to the La Fuente Clinic in Cusco who are able to serve with compassion and excellence, healing in Jesus’ name. We also hope to see these graduates go out into all of Peru to serve in the same way.
